WCSD School Bus Safety Tips

Things Parents Should Know About School Bus Safety:

-
School Buses are the safest form of highway transportation.
-
The most dangerous part of the school bus ride is getting on and off the bus. Due to distracted or inpatient drivers not paying attention to the buses signal lights.
-
Pedestrian fatalities (while loading and unloading school buses) account for approximately three times as many school bus-related fatalities, when compared to school bus occupant fatalities.
-
The loading and unloading area is called the “Danger Zone”
-
The “Danger Zone” is the area on all sides of the bus where children are in the most danger of not being seen by the driver (10 feet on either side of the bus where a child may be in the driver’s blind spot and the area behind the bus).
-
This is why we ask all of students to wait for the driver to signal for them to cross in front of the bus only when crossing a road.

Things Kids Should Know About School Bus Safety:

-Arrive at your bus stops 5 minutes early.

-Stand at least 5 giant steps (10 Feet) away from the edge of the road.

-Wait until the bus stops, the doors open, and the driver gives the okay to load the bus.

-The bus driver and others cannot see you if you are standing closer than 10 feet to the bus.     STAY OUT OF THE DANGER ZONE.

-When crossing the street walk 10 giant steps to the front of the bus and wit for the driver to give the okay to cross the street.

-If you can’t see the driver the driver can’t see you.

-If you drop something under the bus ALWAYS have your driver get it for you.

Please talk with your children about these things. If you see a vehicle run a bus stop signs (Red lights) please get the license plate # and report it to our Dispatch at353-5900.

Please help keep our parking lot safe

Please do not park and leave your vehicle unattended along any red curb at Whitehead School. If you are dropping off  or picking up along the red curb the driver must remain in the vehicle. Since our red curb identifies the fire lane this rule is to be followed at all times, before, during and after school. There is parking along the plain curbs on Waterfall Dr. and Shadow Ln.
The yellow curbs in the front of the school are for the school bus loading and unloading zone . This is a friendly reminder that drivers may not pass any school bus while it has it's stop sign out and it's red lights flashing to let other drivers know that students are loading and unloading.
Thank you for working together to make our school parking lot and Waterfall Dr. a safe place for everyone.
